Call for Panel Experts

Call for Panel Experts

The Call for Panel Experts is officially closed!

The panel talks have become a fun part of WordCamps and WordCamp Asia is no exception.

At WordCamp Asia 2020 we’re inviting applications for panel experts. You can either be a panellist (speaker) or a moderator (anchor).

Even though we are inviting applications for five-panel topics, depending on the quality of applications and logistics, we will select anywhere between 1-4 panels. Four is the upper limit as we need to fit panels in the existing two speaker tracks.

Each panel will be 45-60 mins in time including Q&A.

List of panel topics

  1. Diversity Challenges in WordPress: Focussed on unique challenges people from diverse backgrounds face in the WordPress ecosystem. We are hoping to encourage a diverse group of participants to speak for themselves.
  2. Remote Working: Focussed on the emerging trends of remote working discussing challenges, opportunities, or digital nomad lifestyle. Please understand this is not a debate between “work from office” versus “remote working”. This is more about how to get “remote working” working for you. You must have some experiences with remote working. If it did not work for you, you are encouraged to share your views.
  3. Future of WordPress Economy: Focussed on different types of business we have in the WordPress ecosystem, and anticipating how they will evolve over time. If you are applying to this one, please ensure you write a line about what business you are representing and what you would like to discuss.
  4. Careers in WordPress: Focussed on helping individuals explore different opportunities in the WordPress ecosystem, especially non-programming opportunities. We would prefer to hear from “peers” rather than HR. Please understand this is not a platform to announce “we are hiring”. For that, sponsoring WordCamp Asia is a better idea.
  5. PHP vs JavaScript: Focussed on the latest developments from a programming language point of view. We would love to hear your thoughts even if you know one side of the equation. Ideally, we will have two panellists/speakers for PHP and JavaScript each on stage.

Selection Criteria

Panel Expert

As for speakers, we request a panel expert to have prior speaking experience at different WordCamps. If you have been on a panel before as a panel expert that would work even better for you.

Please don’t forget to share past video links of your panel or speaker talks as we will be using them in the vetting process.

Moderator

Moderators also must have prior speaking experience. We will have a strong preference for somebody who has moderated a panel before.

Please submit video link — from WordPress.tv, YouTube or any source — during the application process to help us understand your skill.

Process

Please open this “Call for Panel Experts” form and submit your nomination.

You can apply for yourself only. If you think that somebody would make a good panel expert, you are more than welcome to send them the form link and ask them to apply directly.

You can apply for any number of panels and also apply for both, panellist as and moderator role.

Dates

  1. Call for Panel Experts will be open until September 30, 2019, until 23:59 UTC.
  2. Panel Experts will be selected until the end of October 2019.
  3. Selected Panel Experts will be informed starting early November 2019.
  4. The Panel Experts will be announced starting December 5, 2019, in one blog post or in batches depending on the number of panels we settle on.
  5. Final WordCamp schedule, including panel(s), will be published by December 13, 2019.

FAQ

Q. Can I apply for Panel Expert and Speaker?

Yes. But you will be selected for either or none. Not both, as we want the audience to hear from more people.

Q. Can I apply for somebody else?

You are supposed to apply for yourself only. If you think somebody will be a good fit, you can invite them to apply for themselves.

Q. Should I buy a ticket now?

If you are selected as a panel expert, we will give you a complimentary ticket to attend the event.

If you couldn’t make the cut, we will give you an option to buy a ticket at a later date. We have kept enough reserved tickets for this case, so no need to buy a ticket now if you are applying as a panel expert. If you have any questions, please contact us.
